What is a diamond ?

A diamond is pure carbon, but with three extraordinary characteristics. First, it has the unique power to reflect light. Second, it is the only mineral, whose consistency is based on one element, and therefore the purest of all gems. Third, it is the hardest, transparent substance that mankind knows (hardness 10 in the Mohs - scale). Diamond became its name for its hardness (gr. Adamas: the untamed).
